The Day after Tomorrow
2004.10.07 :: 星期四
Just bought this DVD and watched. The movie was a shocker when I first watched in the theatres. Yes, the story is too lame and special effects are just OK, but no doubt the movie is one of its kind and created some thoughts for me. As witnessed by recent weather disruptions such as irregular typhoon season in the Asia Pacific area, hotter and hotter climate, it is very striking to watch the scenes in the movie that they seem to be actually HAPPENING in the real world. Scary.
The bonus Disc is a real plus, I really watched the one-hour long "The Science of Tomorrow: The Science and Politics of Climate Change". It is closely related to the movie and provided the background of the movie. Though some of the presenters did not agree with the view points and dramatic exaggerations of the movie, the underlying problem of the world is the excessive use of fossil fuel energy and the political reasoning to block or interfere any migration to cleaner energy generation.
Yes, it's hard to imagine US being the largest single country to consume fossile fuel energy, at 25% of the world's production. Thanks to its extensive network of highways which discourages the use of public transportation like railways and buses. Most developed areas like Europe and Japan have extensive network of railways and the use of buses are popular. Public transports are environmentally friendly and good for travellers, I always wonder why they would not be pushed in the US. Privacy? Convenience? Maybe the lifestyle being adopted for long would not be easily changed. I think the raising of gas prices these days could ring the bell and encourage US people to think twice about driving.
Yes, to be honest, I myself am not a huge fan of green life, because something got used to is not easily given up. But I think everyone can do a bit of his or her own to protect our own home, like use less electricity, try to walk, or at least take public transports, recycle anything you can. Talk to your legislators, create a pressure to the government that we wish for something more on environment protection policies. It's really hard to imagine if the movie goes real.

人始終係自私自利,明明可以發展其他野代替石油,但為左利益寧願地陷。將來就算唔變成齣戲咁,自滅始終難免。
