iPhoto book printing experience
2005.06.30 :: 星期四I asked some time ago about printing photo book created by iPhoto but no one seemed to have any experience. So I am in Canada now, I ordered two photo books at home and deliver to my friend's home in Canada, express delivery actually delivered within 4 days. The process is quite simple.
When you finish working with your photo book, better create it as a pdf
file and check each page whether you have finished all text entries. I
have had some incidents that the screen has the text but nothing
appeared in the final pdf file.
Click BUY BOOK, it will ask you to create an iPhoto account if you do
it the first time. Create an account using your apple id, you can enter
your own credit card information, but it may not let you enter your
correct billing address, no need to panic, just enter most of the
correct information (like your full Hong Kong address), for the postal
code and country you can enter your friend's home postal code (since
this is valid) and country. The system will not check you anyways.

After that u can create a delivery address, make that your friend's
correct address, its better to give the phone number so the deliverer
can call your friend. For express Apple used DHL so it will deliver
within the next day for undelivery, or leave you a card to call for
arrangement.
That's it! After you finished entering the information the file will be
sent to the printer somewhere in the world and print the book for you
and send to the delivery address directly (mine is a printer in
California). One culprit here: the progress bar will stop moving at the
beginning, I don't know if this is a bug, but you have no way to know
whether it is sending or not. It took me almost 10 mins to send a file
around 36M.
When you order the second time the system will remember your last
delivery information, you can create a bunch of addresses so each book
is delivered to any of your friends within the countries they serve.
I took the photo books to our friends for sharing and they were very
impressed by the quality of the books. The photo quality, well, is not
like those you print from your ink jet printer, the resolution is a bit
low, like from those 2M pixel cameras, but everything is nicely aligned
just exactly like you see in iPhoto, including the Chinese text as well
(why not?). It's fun and easy to make one to impress your friends. If you want to tweak the book printing quality, you can take a look at this.

Of course, it's not that cheap, I got a 50 page soft copy book for
around USD 48 delivered to Canada. But my friend who knows this kind of
stuff said the printer itself, which does printing and automatic
binding for you, would cost a few million USD. So the price is
actually pretty affordable. Of course, if I could find a printer in
Hong Kong that can print ONE color and binded book using a PDF file I
would be much appreciated. Anyone?
(The photos come from the trip to Japan this April, you can go to here to check it out)
